Local plan scoping consultation

We are residents of Macclesfield, living on (redacted), and have a stakeholder interest in the sustainable future of our area. We wish to comment on potential changes to the green belt policy, with particular reference to the area between Leadbeaters Reservoir and Blakelow Road.

1. We object to any loss of the green belt, particularly whilst there remains the potential for development of brownfield and grey belt sites within the town and wider council area.

2. Macclesfield is one of the western entrances to the Peak District. The land between the Reservoir and Blakelow Road provides a steep undulating green landscape visible from the town and providing sweeping, south-west views overlooking the town and well beyond. Its scenic green space provides a boundary between the built up urban area and the further open countryside above. Many people cherish the view from Blakelow Road as they stroll, walk their dogs or otherwise exercise along its upper stretch.

3. The hillside naturally drains into the Reservoir. Any hard development of the site could create pollution from run-off.

4. The reservoir and the open fields above are important local natural amenities, providing habitats for local flora and fauna. In springtime frogs and toads return through the fields to spawn in the reservoir. A barn owl has been seen hunting above the field and tawny owls are frequently heard in the vicinity.
