See all of the above. In order to be healthy, people need to be housed well, in a pleasant environment. Deprivation leads to poverty and illness, putting more of a burden on the NHS.

Presently in Handforth the bus service is only hourly and finishes at 6pm, effectively a curfew on those without cars. There used to be a service to Manchester and Stockport but that has long gone. Yes, we can use the train, but that is no good to those with free bus passes - young people, the elderly and the disabled. Disabled people cannot use the station in Handforth as there is no lift.

Every small piece of land that becomes empty is immediately filled with a building, whether it be a care home, a block of flats or an 'executive home'. Why can't we take back some of these spaces, plant trees and flowers, and use them as parks?

Designs for housing should be driven in the first instance by our vision of a beautiful and socially integrated city. For example, street-based neighbourhoods are an effective way of organising public space: they are narrow, concentrating the public life of an area into a limited space, bringing together people of diverse social, economic and cultural groups and creating the potential for a colourful social scene. The buildings bounding the street can house a mix of uses – retail, leisure, business and residential – that create a vibrant local culture and 24-hour occupancy.

Offer favourable rents to those shops and businesses currently disappearing - bakers, shoe repairers, banks, greengrocers, hardware shops, etc. and put a limit on cafes, bars, restaurants and takeaways.

There has been a rise in rough sleeping and a rise in property prices and the cost of private-sector rentals. Housing is a basic human need, not a commodity. We should be creating many more council houses a year, funded by direct taxation. Rather than rebuilding, these could be refurbished from the enormous stock of empty homes. There are currently 250,000 homeless people in the UK and over 500,000 empty houses, echoed on a smaller scale in second homes and AirB&Bs, empty 9 months a year, pricing out working people.
