Disley – Infrastructure, Traffic and Community Concerns

Key concerns for Cheshire East Council

- A6 traffic and heavy goods vehicles: Disley already experiences significant and unacceptable levels of traffic on the A6, particularly large lorries, wagons and other heavy goods vehicles. This causes congestion, noise, pollution and road-safety concerns for residents and pedestrians.

- A bypass is needed regardless of future development: The current traffic problems are not simply a consequence of proposed housing development. Even without any further development, the volume of traffic using the A6 through Disley means that a bypass, or other substantial traffic-management measures, are urgently needed to protect the village and improve road safety.

- Development must not worsen the existing problem: If further housing development is permitted, Cheshire East must first demonstrate that the necessary infrastructure can cope. Development should be accompanied by investment in roads, schools, drainage, healthcare and other essential services.

- Parking and road safety: Roads and illegal parking have become an increasing problem since Cheshire East Council introduced parking charges in the village, creating additional obstruction and making some roads more difficult and dangerous to use.

- Schools and community facilities: Additional development will place further pressure on local schools and services. Adequate capacity must be provided rather than allowing existing facilities to become overstretched.

- Visible policing: Disley has a lack of visible, on-the-beat policing. A greater police presence would help address illegal parking, road safety, antisocial behaviour and residents' concerns about community safety.



Cheshire East Council should recognise that Disley's existing infrastructure is already under considerable pressure. A solution to the A6 traffic problem is needed irrespective of whether further development takes place.

Any future development must not be allowed to compound these existing problems. A bypass or other effective measures to reduce A6 through-traffic should be treated as a priority, alongside investment in the wider infrastructure needed to support the community.
