Re: Proposed development at Ashley
I am writing to object to the proposed large-scale development around Ashley.
My main concern is that the local infrastructure simply isn't set up for this number of additional homes and people. The roads around Ashley are already busy and many are narrow rural roads that were never designed for this level of traffic.
Public transport isn't a realistic answer to the problem either. Although we have the train at Ashley, the service is limited. For people travelling towards Altrincham and Manchester, the tram would be an obvious alternative to driving, but there simply isn't enough parking available to make this work.
Navigation Road is a good example. It only has around 66 Park & Ride spaces and, in my experience, unless you get there pre 7am it is extremely difficult to get a space. Other tram stops around Altrincham don't provide enough free parking either. If thousands of new homes are built, where are all these additional commuters supposed to park to use the tram?
The reality is that many people would end up driving, putting even more pressure on Ashley, Hale, Hale Barns, Bowdon and Altrincham, as well as the A538 and surrounding roads.
I'm also concerned about the sheer scale of what is being proposed. Ashley is a small rural community and thousands of new homes would completely change its character. It would also mean losing a huge amount of Green Belt and agricultural land and reducing the important green space separating Cheshire from Greater Manchester.
I understand that new homes need to be built, but they need to be in places where the roads, public transport, schools, healthcare and other services can actually support them. I don't believe Ashley is such a location.
For these reasons, I strongly object to these sites being allocated for large-scale development.
