I note with concern the possibility of green belt land being included as possible sites for housing development. This should only be considered when there are no brownfield or greyfield locations, and even then, there needs to be extraordinarily strong reasons to reduce the greenbelt, especially in view of the climate change. The green belt provides protection for nature and if the edges are eroded and nibbled away the effects spread far. It also provides amenity and character to an area, retaining rural qualities for the existing population.
Additionally there is also the specific problem of water supply in the Macclesfield area. There has already been a significant increase in the number of houses, but no increase in reservoir capacity. With summers such as this that we can now expect frequently, water shortages will already occur, more housing will exacerbate this problem. The water companies will try to avoid this investment by placing more and more restrictions on water usage. That is an unsatisfactory if not dangerous solution. Developers need to contribute significant sums for increasing water supply.
