Local plan scoping consultation

While I fully understand and share many of the concerns raised about the impact of further development in Disley and Newtown, particularly regarding traffic congestion on the A6, pressure on local services and the need to protect our environment, we also need to recognise the reality that people need somewhere to live. Housing demand will not disappear simply because suitable sites are difficult to find, and unfortunately there are very limited brownfield opportunities available in and around our villages. If we are to meet Government housing requirements, some greenfield land may inevitably need to be considered, but this must be done carefully and sensitively, with the right sites selected and with proper investment in infrastructure, roads, schools, healthcare and local services. Development should not simply add pressure to an already stretched community; it should bring benefits and improvements for existing residents as well as new ones. The key issue is therefore not whether we build at all, but ensuring that any development is appropriate, sustainable and accompanied by the investment needed to make Disley and Newtown an even better place to live.
